Business tycoon Adar Poonawalla’s company Serene Entertainment has acquired 50% stake in Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Dharmatic Entertainment for ₹1,000 crore. The rest of it will remain with Karan Johar who will be the Executive Chairman and lead the creative vision of the company. This strategic deal is likely to propel Dharma Productions to new heights not just at home but abroad as well.
CEO at Dharma, Apoorva Mehta, continues to work with Karan Johar in guiding the company’s strategic direction, always laser focused on operational excellence and creative development.
Adar Poonawalla’s Vision
Speaking on the partnership, Poonawalla said, “I am excited to partner with one of the most iconic production houses in our nation and my friend Karan Johar. We look forward to building and growing Dharma and scaling even greater heights in the years to come.”
This will be one of the most important endeavours for Poonawalla, who hails mainly as the CEO of the Serum Institute of India, whose portfolio is new in the entertainment business. He would look at developing new growth platforms in the entertainment world-recreational and distribution.
Karan Johar’s Perspective
Karan Johar, reacting to the milestone of Dharma’s history, stated this partnership and said he was positive about the future of Dharma. “Since its inception, Dharma Productions has been synonymous with heartfelt storytelling that captures the essence of Indian culture. My father dreamed of creating films that would leave a lasting impact, and I’ve dedicated my career to expanding that vision,” Johar said.
The co-producer believes that his working relationship with Poonawalla will lead to a perfect blend of storytelling acumen combined with visionary business foresight. He further adds, “Today, as we partner with Adar, a very dear friend and brilliant visionnaire and innovator, we stand on the threshold to take Dharma’s legacy to a new high.”
Karan added that this collaboration unlocks new doors for production houses, in terms of making content that works not just in India but all over the world. According to him, this journey of Dharma has been terrific, and this alliance shows the next level of growth in its life cycle.
Apoorva Mehta’s Glimpse into the Future
One of the important stakeholders is none other than Apoorva Mehta, the CEO of Dharma Productions. According to him, this partnership would make “more significant creative steps” in light of the fast-changing entertainment landscape.
“Over the years, I have witnessed the transformation of Dharma into a multi-dimensional content powerhouse. This collaboration with Adar materialises our vision and introduces a new era in which cinema, streaming, and global content come together. It will enable us to tread on new roads in content creation and distribution and elevate the Indian entertainment ecosystem,” Mehta mentioned.
This financial investment has provided Mehta with new doorways for Dharma to further expand into cinema and streaming as well as global markets.
A Legacy of Storytelling
Success can be attributed to him, owing to the fact that Dharma Productions were founded by Karan Johar’s father Yash Johar in the year 1976 and have produced some of the iconic films in the history of Bollywood, including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, Good Newwz, and Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva.
Dharmatic, founded in 2018, is the digital and web content subsidiary of Dharma. Till date, Dharmatic has released such critically acclaimed projects like Ajeeb Daastaans and Ae Watan Mere Watan, and shows like Koffee With Karan and Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Wives.
This combination makes Dharma and Dharmatic get on an audacious future wherein they will be integrating old school storytelling with novel, global entertainment strategies.
