WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, is reportedly preparing to release a range of new features and updates, including a highly anticipated feature that enables users to send high-definition (HD) photos. The latest reports from WABetaInfo indicate that the feature is currently being rolled out to Android and iOS beta versions of the app, allowing users to choose the quality of the photos they share on the platform.
Until now, WhatsApp has compressed the quality of images, which has been a source of frustration for users who wanted to share high-resolution media files within the app. However, with this new feature, users will have the option to select the HD photo quality when sending large-size files. While there will still be minor compression applied to the pictures, the feature preserves the original dimensions of the images.
By default, the option for sharing pictures in high resolution will always be set to ‘Standard quality.’ Therefore, users will need to manually select the HD option each time they wish to send a photo with better quality. When utilizing this feature, a new tag will be added to the message bubble to notify the recipient that the photo was sent using the high-quality option.
The rollout of the ability to send HD pictures on WhatsApp has commenced for selected beta testers on Android and iOS (iPhone OS), with a wider release expected over the next few weeks. This update follows previous reports in January, which mentioned that the messaging platform was working on the feature for Android beta, and subsequent reports in the following month indicated that it was also in development for iOS beta.
