As Indian authorities pressure mobile phone manufacturers to adopt the high-speed network, Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics announced on Wednesday that they will upgrade the software for their 5G-enabled phones in India by December.
According to industry sources, Apple indicated it would deliver software updates to current devices including the iPhone 14, 13, 12, and SE, which do not yet support the network.
As soon as network validation and testing for quality and performance is through, we are working with our carrier partners in India to offer the finest 5G experience to iPhone users, according to a statement from Apple.
In December, iPhone owners will begin to receive software updates that allow 5G.
On October 1, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi debuted 5G services amid much enthusiasm. Leading telecom provider Reliance Jio announced that it would roll out the service in four locations, while rival Bharti Airtel set its sights on eight.
By the middle of November, all of Samsung India’s 5G devices would receive updates, according to a company spokeswoman.
Officials from the ministry of electronics and IT convened a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the adoption of 5G, and executives from Apple, Samsung, Vivo, and Xiaomi as well as representatives from the telecom companies Reliance, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea were there.
The delivery of software changes to enable the high-speed network is on the agenda, according to the notification for the meeting behind closed doors.
