The new Apple App Store guidelines are now available. The new rules, among other things, explain the company’s policy toward payments made with non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and cryptocurrency. The Cupertino-based company now allows apps to trade in digital tokens and currencies if the exchanges have the necessary regional licences to operate in the region where the app is distributed.
According to Apple’s revised guidelines, “apps may use in-app purchases to sell and sell services related to non-fungible tokens (NFTs), such as minting, listing, and transferring.”
The new rules state that apps will be able to allow users to view their own NFTs as long as NFT ownership does not unlock features or functionality within the app. Apps may also allow users to browse NFT collections owned by others. However, the apps must not include any buttons, external links, or other calls to action that direct customers to purchasing mechanisms other than in-app purchases.
The iPhone maker expressly forbids any app functionality that allows NFT holders to “unlock features or functionality within the app, “which could have served as an indirect workaround to its payment rule Apple charges a standard 30% fee on in-app purchases for the uninitiated.
Apple has also updated the App Store’s 3.1.5(iii) rule to include cryptocurrency exchanges. “Apps may facilitate cryptocurrency transactions or transmissions on an approved exchange, but only in countries or regions where the app has appropriate licencing and permissions to provide a cryptocurrency exchange.” “The rule now reads as follows:
On the App Store, cryptocurrency exchanges such as Coinbase and Binance already exist. The new guidelines will provide app developers with a little more direction for their businesses.
In another update, Apple has begun to distribute macOS Ventura to its Mac line of computers. Stage Manager, Live Captions for all audio content, Live Text in videos, and a Message edit option are all included in the new operating system. It also updates the platform’s capabilities.
