Captain Fresh recently raised approximately $25 million from both new and existing investors, prompting the latest appointment. Captain Fresh bought CenSea Inc, a frozen fish and seafood importer and distributor based in the United States, in February to get access to the lucrative North American marketplace.
Captain Fresh, a Bengaluru-based B2B seafood firm, appointed Mathew George as its group chief financial officer (CFO) on May 17.
The business is currently seeking additional funding, as Inc42 exclusively revealed in February, coinciding with the new appointment. Captain Fresh purchased CenSea Inc, a frozen fish and seafood importer and distributor based in the United States, the same month, to get access to the lucrative North American market.
As the company strives to scale up and expand into new areas, George’s appointment is anticipated to help reinforce the finance operations and M&A activities. Captain Fresh cofounder and CEO Utham Gowda stated that George’s arrival will be important for the company’s path to a public listing.
Captain Fresh has already secured over $25 million from new investors this year and is in the midst of obtaining additional funds from previous backers including Tiger Global, Matrix Partners, Evolvence, and SBI Investment.
“With a clear strategy, verified execution success, and the support of prominent investors, I believe we are well-positioned to accelerate our expansion. “I am excited to use my financial expertise to work with the team to create value for our shareholders and employees,” George said in a statement.
George, a former global chief financial officer at Medi Assist, has previously worked for Jumbo global, HCL Technologies, Cognizant, Genpact, and Accenture.
Captain Fresh, established in 2019, is a seafood supply chain network that also offers a marketplace for fishermen to sell their harvest. Aside from that, it collaborates with retail outlets and supermarket chains to oversee fish sales operations from beginning to end.
The company competes with meat and seafood supply startups like FreshtoHome, Licious, and Freshma, among others.
Captain Fresh operates on a business-to-business (B2B) basis, providing sellers with fish and seafood. The firm will see 80-85% of its overall business coming from the European and US markets.
Captain Fresh collaborates with merchants such as Metro, Auchan, and Carrefour, and is available in France, Germany, Poland, and the Middle East. About 2-3% of its revenue originates from India.
