For the new facility, the business will work with Optiemus Infracom, its Indian partner. Although no precise timetable has been agreed upon, the sources added that they project the building phase to take about a year.
According to an Economic Times story quoting sources, Corning Inc., a major supplier to Apple known for its Gorilla Glass technology, will invest ₹1,000 crore to establish a new production facility in Tamil Nadu.
For the new facility, the business will work with Optiemus Infracom, its Indian partner. Although no precise timetable has been agreed upon, the sources added that they project the building phase to take about a year.
Located on a 25-acre site in Pillaipakkam, close to Sriperumbudur, the factory will have about 300 workers and is ideally positioned for future growth, the article continued. This development coincides with Apple’s announcement that it will be moving the majority of its iPhone manufacturing to India. Corning has increased its presence in the nation, along with a number of other suppliers to Apple.
Moving from Telangana to a New State?
The Telangana government had previously announced Corning Inc.’s plans to invest in the state; nevertheless, insiders informed the newspaper that Tamil Nadu’s “robust electronics ecosystem and proximity to other Apple suppliers” were the reasons the business moved its facility there. Major Apple contract manufacturers, including Foxconn, Pegatron, and Tata Electronics, are already based in Tamil Nadu.
They further stated that the decision was finalized last week. It is anticipated that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be inked in January at the Global Investor Meet.
“Although I will not get into the details, I can confirm that Tamil Nadu is working hard to create an exceptional electronics environment that meets all international requirements. Our strategy is to attract specialist firms that can serve original equipment firms (OEMs) and move up the electronics value chain. Our focused efforts to establish Tamil Nadu as a global leader in electronics manufacturing and support India’s rise as a major electronics center depend heavily on luring these niche firms, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa told the newspaper.
Corning Inc., a Fortune 500 materials science firm with its headquarters in New York, is well-known for creating Gorilla Glass, an extremely durable glass that is widely used in laptops, tablets, and mobile phones.
