The first chip built in India would be available in December, according to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, underscoring Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitions to build a robust semiconductor sector. Vaishnaw attributed Modi’s success to his emphasis on talent development and building a robust ecosystem
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced here that the country’s first made-in-India chip will be available by December. She credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for quickly building a robust semiconductor industry in the nation while keeping an eye on the entire ecosystem.
Speaking to PTI at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2024, the minister stated that PM Modi introduced a semiconductor policy in January 2022. He went on to say that the senior industry representatives he met with here were all astonished by the amount of work that could be completed in such a short amount of time.
“They all appreciated the policy and the fact that PM Modi has always stressed on creating a comprehensive ecosystem because not many countries have this kind of policy and therefore they could not get such success,” he stated.
The prime minister has always prioritized creating an ecosystem that places a strong emphasis on talent, according to the minister of communications as well as electronics and information technology.
Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) have been established with 104 universities; their curricula are being changed, and the design is receiving a lot of attention with a distinct funding plan.
Numerous design firms are reaping the rewards and are progressively moving up the value chain. Companies throughout the world are appreciating this, he said.
Using Macron as an example, Vaishnaw noted that everyone has been pleasantly surprised by how quickly the Macron facility has advanced.
“The agreement was signed in June 2023, while construction started in September 2023, and the first made-in-India chip will be out in December 2024,” added the official.
“All manufacturing CEOs, investment bankers, and semiconductor business heads are acknowledging these factors here at Davos and are saying that India has developed a very strong semiconductor industry,” the minister stated.
Speaking about why this industry’s development did not receive more attention in the past, Vaishnaw stated that Modi’s thinking is always centered on the long term, whether it is defense production, infrastructure investment, or sector-wide changes.
“At least ten, twenty, thirty, and fifty years are always in the forefront of his thoughts. According to him, everything is done now should benefit the nation for many years to come,” he continued.
According to the minister, past administrations tended to be short-sighted and focused only on winning elections.
Additionally, there is now the necessary clarity in “niti” and “neeyat.” All of this is contributing to the excellent job being done in India, which is appreciated by people all around the world, “added the speaker.
