Maruti Suzuki India would spend Rs 35,000 crore to establish its second manufacturing site in Gujarat, Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki said on Wednesday.
Speaking at the 10th Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit (VGGS), Toshihiro said that the factory will have an established manufacturing capacity of 10 lakh units per year.
“We would spend Rs 35,000 crore in the development of a second automobile factory in Gujarat, producing an additional one million cars every year. As a consequence, the yearly manufacturing capacity in Gujarat will be two million units: one million at Suzuki Motor Gujarat and one million at the second new facility,” Suzuki said.
Suzuki Motor controls roughly 58% of Maruti Suzuki India, which plans to add another 20 lakh units of manufacturing capacity by 2030-31, with about 28 distinct models on the market.
Currently, the automaker has a total production capacity of around 22 lakh units per year across its two manufacturing locations in Haryana and Gujarat.
The two Haryana facilities — Gurgugram and Manesar — produce around 15.5 lakh units each year.
Suzuki Motor Gujarat, a subsidiary of the business, has also established a plant in Gujarat with an installed manufacturing capacity of 7.5 lakh units per year.
Furthermore, the auto industry leader is now establishing a new production factory in Sonipat, Haryana, with an initial expenditure of Rs 11,000 crore.
The new plant’s first phase, with a production capacity of 2.5 lakh units per year, is slated to be operational by next year.
India’s biggest automaker has released its December 2023 sales figures. Maruti Suzuki has sold 1,37,551 units, comprising total domestic sales and total exports in both the PV and CV categories. From April to December, Maruti sold 15,51,292 units in FY 2023-24, up from 14,51,237 in FY 2022-23. Mini vehicles, once Maruti Suzuki’s dominating and defining segment, reached an all-time low in December 2023. The Mini segment, which includes once-dominant names like Alto and S-Presso, accounted for just 2,557 units, down from 9,765 the previous year.
The Compact class includes the Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, Tour S, and WagonR. It accounted for 45,741 units, down from 57,502 in 2022. The 6,10,011 units in FY 2023-24 between April and December were also down YoY, compared to 6,37,459. For fiscal year 2023, the Compact sector accounted for 9,94,118 units.
With just Ciaz in the mid-size category, the 489 units tallied fell short of the 1,154 units sold the previous year. In 2023, Ciaz sold 10,995 units. Maruti now focuses on the utility area, which is more profitable. This includes the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicta, Jimny, S-Cross, and XL6.
