Meta stated that its GenAI-powered experiences are in various stages of development, and it is testing a number of them publicly in a restricted capacity. The ‘Meta AI’ feature is driven by Meta’s open-source large language model, LLaMA, and is presently only available in English. The India trial comes months after the tech giant originally revealed Meta AI in September of last year.
Meta, the social media powerhouse, is apparently testing a GenAI chatbot for Indian customers across its three platforms: WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger.
According to a Meta representative, “Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity.”
The company’s large language model, LLAMA (Large Language Model Meta AI), is open-source and powers the ‘Meta Al’ function. The offering is currently only available in English.
According to the WhatsApp feature snippet, the chatbot allows users to “get answers to any question”, “see recommendations”, “find information”, and “generate unique images”.
While the social networking platform stated that private communications would remain end-to-end encrypted and would not be “read” by Meta, it did add that users’ Al messages might be “used” by the company to improve Al quality.
The India test comes months after the tech giant originally introduced Meta AI in September of last year.
According to the report, the AI chatbot has also been selectively deployed in areas of Africa as the corporation seeks to expand and grow its AI-powered solutions in order to retain and attract new consumers. According to reports, the large tech company has lately begun testing AI chatbots in the United States.
India and other emerging countries remain Meta’s primary focus regions even though the country in North America has reached a growth plateau. India is its largest market in terms of user base, with WhatsApp accounting for over 500 million users in the country.
Similarly, Meta apparently has 362 million Instagram users and 314 million Facebook members in the country.
The AI chatbot test in India is anticipated to help the social media giant fine-tune its product and provide an even wider pool of user data to train its LLM. Furthermore, the move would help the company position itself better as competitors OpenAI and Google continue to capitalise on the GenAI craze and entice new consumers with unique offers.
The announcement of the new pilot coincides with rumors that the social media behemoth intended to establish its first data center in India at the Chennai campus of Reliance Industries (RIL).
Facebook India’s net profit increased 19% year on year (YoY) to INR 352 crore in FY23, while total revenue increased 20% to INR 2,776 crore from INR 2,324 crore in FY22.
