Two days after Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s childhood pal revealed a major update on his retirement plans, Dhoni provided an update on Facebook on Monday, confusing his followers.
Dhoni posted on Facebook, “Can’t wait for the new season and the new ‘role’.” Stay tuned!”
With this new update, Dhoni is projected to return as captain for the IPL 2024 season, while another rumor suggests he may take on another position – most likely as a mentor – for his team, the Chennai Super Kings.
Dhoni played the same role for the Indian cricket team at the T20 World Cup in 2021.
Though Dhoni has already begun exercising in the nets, the stakes are high that he will opt to participate in the IPL 2024 season, which may be his last.
In 2023, the CSK captain led his club to their sixth IPL title. His last remarks were, “The easy thing would be to walk away, but I want to work hard for the next nine months and come back for another IPL season.”
Previously, his childhood friend Paramjit Singh, who assisted MS Dhoni in the early stages of his career, stated that Dhoni will play at least one more season after IPL 2024. “I do not believe this will be Dhoni’s last season. He is still physically fit. I think he’ll play one or two more seasons. He will definitely play another season. The reason is that he is fit,” Paramjit Singh stated when asked about MS Dhoni’s retirement plans, as reported by Livemint.
Singh’s comments came just days after a video of MS Dhoni practicing went viral on social media, showing his bat with a ‘Prime Sports’ sticker from Paramjit Singh’s business.
The most successful Indian captain, along with Rohit Sharma, holds the title for being the tournament’s joint-most successful captain.
Dhoni stepped down as CSK captain in 2022, paving the way for Ravindra Jadeja, but after the team lost five consecutive games, Dhoni was reinstalled.
Meanwhile, Dhoni was last spotted partying at Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding celebrations in Jamnagar.
He was spotted with his wife Sakshi and a slew of Indian celebrities, as well as learning dandiya from former CSK player Dwayne Bravo.
