According to industry participants, the Indian hospitality and tourism sector is anticipated to undergo faster employment in the coming years after seeing significant growth this year, with domestic travel leading the way.
With the Hotel Association of India (HAI) projecting the hotel industry’s direct contribution to India’s GDP to reach $1 trillion by 2047, experts believe there will be a minimum 25% increase in the need for workforce, with adjacent industries such as travel, aviation, ticket booking, travel guides, and consultants becoming increasingly in demand.
“The direct contribution of the hotel industry to India’s GDP reaching USD 1 trillion by 2047 is a significant milestone.”
“This significant expansion would surely boost job creation within the industry, employing millions of people with varied skill sets,” HAI Vice President K B Kachru told PTI. Kachru, who is also Chairman Emeritus and Principal Advisor, at South Asia Radisson Hotel Group, went on to say that in the aftermath of the epidemic, the hotel industry underwent a massive shift, completely changing the job environment.
“We have witnessed a paradigm shift in how we operate, with more emphasis being put on adaptability, digital innovation, and a heightened focus on guest safety and well-being,” he went on to say.
Chalet Hotels Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Urvi Aradhya expressed similar sentiments, saying, “The post-pandemic employment landscape in the hospitality sector reflects a blend of technological integration, an increased emphasis on health and safety, a focus on local tourism, and a shift towards more flexible work arrangements.“
According to Gi Group Vice President Sudeep Sen, “With the world of work specific to the hospitality industry, as well as allied ones, looking extremely bright, we are going to witness a minimum influx of 25% increase in the need for the workforce.”
He also said that neighboring businesses such as travel, aviation, ticket booking, and travel guides/consultants would be in high demand, with a growth of 15-18% expected, depending on the seasonality of the vacation locations.
“There will be increasing demand for digital content creators, social media managers, sustainability consultants for hotels and resorts, vegan food & beverage specialists, spa & healthcare specialists,” he said.
According to Chander K Baljee, Chairman and Managing Director of Royal Orchid Hotels, there has been considerable growth in domestic travel throughout India, increasing the availability of accommodations across several categories, including 3-, 4-, and 5-star facilities.
“With this expansion, there is also a corresponding addition to the workforce… we have proactively undertaken recruitment of fresh staff,” he went on to say.
