The launch day has longingly been awaited by electric enthusiasts in the Indian market. The American car company Tesla will now set foot in the Indian EV market after a couple of years. The plan of Tesla to build right-hand drive cars in its Austrian plant customized for the Indian road Traffic is not the last action that brings up the importance of Eco friendly Transportation.
This move certainly happens at a very eventful time as the Indian buyers who drive cars are progressing towards the eco-friendly ways to drive. With a sufficiently strong support for Weak Taxation on imported EVs along with reduced GST rates and other incentives, the market becomes readily open for entering EV sellers. For Tesla it was a great timing because there was never a better opportunity for it to enter the Indian market where green cars were all the recently.
Howsoever the Tesla manufactures their car in India, they should be practically making it thru the local stuff locally and not importing the major part of their material from their homeland. Some potential options that are under observation in this context can include big industrial areas like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. As exemplified by these countries, such an infrastructure is well- built by road and rail networks as well as accessible trained workers. Tesla, too, will be able to move its parts and vehicles near major loading docks and port cities to make its logistics fluid.
In addition to producing cars, Tesla will need to put up public charging stations across India. The company’s global Supercharger network plays a big role in addressing range anxiety among drivers. Setting up a reliable fast-charging infrastructure from the beginning will be crucial for Tesla’s success here.
Tesla is also known for its innovative approach to car sales without traditional dealerships. Showrooms act as experience centres where people can learn about EVs and place orders directly. This model has faced legal hurdles in some markets but Tesla remains firm on maintaining ownership of the customer experience.
Interestingly, Tesla will not be the only big player in India’s EV story. Chinese manufacturer BYD already has electric models like the ATTO 3 on local roads supported by a growing charging network. However, Tesla’s premium brand appeal and global reputation may give it an edge in this crucial market.
With India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi also keen to promote EVs and scheduled to meet Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk soon, things seem aligned for the American brand to set the ball rolling. After years of waiting, it looks like Tesla is driving full throttle into the vast and exciting Indian electric vehicle landscape. Its entry will undoubtedly give the country’s green mobility mission an enthusiastic jolt forward.
