1- West Bengal; Largest Rice Producing State

West Bengal is the largest rice producer in India and individually produces about 15.75 million tonnes of rice which is 14% of the total rice produced in the country. In West Bengal, several districts are producing the highest amount of rice making this state one of the largest rice producers in the country. 

Districts like Midnapore, Bardhaman, and Banka Virbhoomi within the state are the important districts where the major agricultural land only cultivates rice and also produces the highest amount of rice. The rice varieties that are used to produce in the region are some of the fine varieties like Swarna, IR36, and Sona Masuri. 

2- Uttar Pradesh; Second Largest Producer of Rice in India

The state is one of the largest producers of rice and in the year 2023- 2024, the cultivation has decreased a little bit because it was around 2.74 tonnes per hectare. The cultivation of rice in this state is lower than the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana which are mostly known for rice production in India.

5- Andhra Pradesh

The state of Andhra Pradesh is the largest rice-producing in the country and it is the fifth state producing rice in the nation. Andhra Pradesh is producing around 7.49 million tonnes of rice which is in the top 5 rice-producing states in India. India is one of the top producers of rice in the world and a state like Andhra Pradesh. The state is best for the production of rice due to its suitability for the environment and water irrigation. 

Some of the districts that produce the largest rice in the state are Krishna, Guntur, West Godavari, and East Godavari which are the major regions for cultivating a large amount of rice. The varieties of rice that are being cultivated in Andhra Pradesh include samba Madhuri, Samael, Sashari, and Sarvani. Andhra Pradesh is the largest rice producer in India.

6- Bihar

Bihar is one of the largest producers of rice in India where 6.5 million tonnes of rice is grown and produced every year and contributes to making India one of the largest rice producers. The state of Bihar is known for the largest production and consumption state which means the state is both for producing and consumption. 

During the winter season, the state of Bihar produces some of the finest varieties of rice like Dhanalakshmi, Gautam, Richaria, and Saroj. Bihar is also the producer of special varieties of rice which include Pusha-33, CR 44-35 (Saket-4) Pusa-2-21 and Prabhat Reddy. All these varieties are very well adopted in the state of Bihar due its the best suitability of the environment.

7- Chattisgarh

Chattisgarh is one of the top 10 rice producers in India and also it has some of the best varieties of rice. The state is producing around 6.09 million tonnes of rice and 3.82 hectares under cultivation. The state is producing around 7,900.000 tonnes of rice on an annual basis. The farmers of Chattisgarh are famous for producing around 2000 varieties of rice including Turiyakbari, Chudi Rice, Lal Dhan, and Red Bengal rice. 

Chattisgarh is one of the states which is producing a major portion of the total rice in the country. The amount of rice which has been produced in India covers around 7 percent of the total rice of the country.

8- Orissa

Orissa is a state that produces the largest amount of rice under the good varieties and farmers which are making this state one of the states that also contribute to India’s production of rice. The state of Orissa produces around 5.87 million tonnes of rice and 3.94 tonnes of cultivation.  Rice is an important food staple in the state and that’s why it covers around 69% of the land of the state.  The state is producing about 63% of rice which is among the total food grains in the state. 

Orissa can grow rice in various climate conditions which contribute to the country’s rice production as a significant factor. The rice industry is also one of the top industries which is the most demanding in all across the world.

9- Assam

Assam is the main state which is producing the largest rice in the country and Assam is a state which largely depends on rice cultivation. In recent years the Assam state is growing around 5.14 million tonnes of rice in a year. The total area of land which is used in Assam is around 2.46 hectares for rice production.

10- Haryana
