Toyota Kirloskar Motor is temporarily stopping the shipping of its three models in the country, the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux, due to “irregularities” discovered in the diesel powerplant certification testing. Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO), a subsidiary of Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), revealed on January 29, 2024, that abnormalities in horsepower output certification testing were discovered on three diesel engine types.
In India, such engines power the Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux.
According to the Economic Times “The irregularities concern the smoothing of power and torque curves but did not lead to any over-stating or over-claims on horsepower, torque, or other powertrain related values,” a Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) official said in a statement when approached about the issue.
The issue has no bearing on the emissions or safety of the affected vehicles, according to the manufacturer.
According to the Economic Times “Toyota is working with relevant authorities to re-confirm the data used to certify the impacted vehicles. As a result, in the event of TKM, the shipping of impacted vehicles will be temporarily suspended,” the manufacturer stated.
TKM would, however, continue to accept new orders for the three models, it stated. According to the corporation, consumers will be carefully informed about this circumstance if their automobiles have previously been dispatched but have not yet been delivered to them.
“Thereafter, we will proceed with registration and delivery for customers who opt to receive their vehicles,” according to the statement.
According to the Economic Times, further, it said: “We would like to reassure our existing customers by stating that we believe their vehicles are unaffected by these irregularities, as this did not result in any variations in horsepower, torque, or other powertrain-related values.”
TKM further stated that this has not harmed their vehicles’ emissions or safety.
“Nevertheless, TKM sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience and concern this irregularity may cause to our customers and other stakeholders,” the company stated.
The Innova Crysta, Fortuner, and Hilux account for over one-third of TKM’s total sales in India.
Ten models employ the problematic engines worldwide, with six in Japan.
