India has effectively launched its Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. As part of a strategic initiative, RuPay card services have also been introduced in Mauritius. An Indian completed the first-ever UPI transaction in Sri Lanka, a significant development in international digital payments.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ranil Wickremesinghe of Sri Lanka, and Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth of Mauritius all took part in the virtual ceremony. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), RuPay is an Indian-origin card payment network that is widely accepted at ATMs, online platforms, and points of sale across the world. UPI services, on the other hand, provide instantaneous real-time payment solutions using mobile phones.
This program demonstrated New Delhi’s dedication to promoting financial cooperation and digital connectivity while strengthening bilateral economic connections with Mauritius and Sri Lanka. According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), India is a leader in Fintech innovation and digital public infrastructure, and the Prime Minister actively encourages partner countries to share their development stories and creative solutions.
The introduction will make UPI settlement services more easily accessible to both Indian nationals traveling to Sri Lanka and Mauritius and Mauritian nationals visiting India.
