During President Joe Biden’s visit to New Delhi, two prominent US lawmakers, Congressman Gregory Meeks, and Congressman Andy Barr put forth the “Technology Exports, to India Act.” The objective of this bill is to eliminate obstacles in the export of technology thereby encouraging the flow of sensitive technologies to India and enhancing technology collaboration, between the two nations.
As President Joe Biden made his way, to New Delhi two influential lawmakers in the US House of Representatives presented legislation aimed at eliminating barriers to exporting high-tech products to India. The goal is to enhance the transfer of sensitive technologies between the two countries and foster stronger bilateral technology cooperation.
The bill, known as the “Technology Exports to India Act ” was introduced on Friday by Congressman Gregory Meeks, who holds a position as Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Congressman Andy Barr serving as vice chair of the House India Caucus.
The primary objective of this act is to streamline the sale of high-performance computers and related equipment to India while simultaneously reinforcing technology collaboration between the United States and India.
“In light of President Biden’s visit for the G20 Summit in India we are thrilled to introduce the ‘Technology Exports to India Act’ with an aim to strengthen technology cooperation between our nations ” expressed both lawmakers in a statement.
By removing restrictions on selling US products like computers and electronic assemblies without requiring a Department of Commerce license this bill seeks not only to boost US-India technology trade but also foster closer ties, between our respective technology companies. Additionally, it strives towards building supply chain resilience for an industry.
“In light of our deepening partnership, with India, this change in legislation aims to remove obstacles in technology collaboration ” expressed Meeks and Barr.
According to the Bill Congress recognizes the significance of enhanced defense cooperation with India in addressing geopolitical and security challenges.
Therefore it is crucial to reduce barriers that hinder collaboration with India while prioritizing national security and strategic objectives as stated in the Bill.
The Bill also emphasizes that President Biden’s authorization for exporting high-performance computers to India would strengthen United States-India cooperation. This action would serve as a testament to Congress’s commitment to India, as a valued partner.
